Week 19
This week, for the first time, the Omikron demo was presented to publishers in England. We moved into overdrive on Monday and Tuesday in order to be ready for Wednesday. We finished at 7 A.M., which gave me barely enough time to get home from the studio, pack my bag, and catch a train for London. The CDs were still warm for the first meeting at Electronic Arts...
After three days of meetings in London, the general reactions of the publishers was that Omikron's 3D engine was one of the most advanced they had ever seen. We offer high resolution, 65000 colors, Gouraud mapping and exact mapping, while maintaining a perfectly fluid frame rate: all of this definitely impressed people. The quality of the Motion Capture was also very much appreciated. This first test in England was very important for us since it lets us get a good idea of where we stand in terms of other projects currently being developed. Now we know that we are somewhat ahead of the others - including developers in England. We have also been able to verify the fact, with publishers in England, that no other project like ours is currently being developed.
Now we need to prove that we are capable of getting a high quality Game Play into operation. It seems that the editors were interested in the fact that the technical problems have all been solved before production begins (including the 3D engine). This gives us the advantage of offering a very short development schedule (12 months) that will focus almost exclusively on the Game Play. That is the best guarantee of getting a high quality game at the outcome.
The next step is when the English publishers come to our studio, which they will do in the next two weeks, to meet with the team and discuss the game in more depth. We are continuing to work on improving the demo version. Antoine is working on the Overlapping management, Fabien is working on transitions into the apartments. Philippe, our animator, is now beginning to work on the animation of the faces in Motion Capture.
Our next trip will be to the United States next week to meet with American publishers. We are hoping that we will be received as enthusiastically as we were in England. The race against the clock has now begun: our deadline for signing Omikron is March 31.
See you all next week for more adventures.
